Hair Extensions - History

Some History on Hair Extensions

As far back as Egyptian times both women and men have worn wigs or hairpieces according to the diktats of fashion.  Wigs, hair switches or hairpieces have come in and out of fashion in just about every century.  In Georgian times high false wigs were worn a norm and men also wore bagwigs.

Fake hair for women became frowned upon after 1800 and women wore hair more naturally.  The addition of false hair returned again with the elaborate Apollo Knots of the Romantic era.  Later human hair additions were used so extensively in the mid Victorian era of elaborate hairstyling that many thousands of pounds of false hair were produced and sold in the 1870’s.

It was about the 1980’s when long hair and extensions came back into play, with the 20’s all the way through the 70’s showing women with short hair being the vogue or fashionable.  The 80’s icon such as Tina Turner and Diana Ross brought back the big hair era, as well as more being best.  Wigs and hairpieces became largely popular.

Next came a new type of hair addition-extensions.  Extensions are somewhat new, and always being improved.  At first extensions were worn only by the very wealthy or celebrities who could afford the then exorbitant cost of laborious all day application.  Others quickly followed when they saw what was possible when hair extensions were applied in a glamorous way.  It became common to see pop singers wearing a wide variety of hair extensions, from wefts to individuals.

Now ordinary people are certainly beginning to wear hair extensions for every day use as well as special events such as weddings, Christmas and holidays.  Some people may consider extensions for medical or cosmetic reasons.  Others just want long hair, and are unable to grow it.  Either way, this is the clientele that the hair extension artists are searching for, and the stylists at Altered Ego are excited to consult you on which method is right for you.  Please call to reserve your appointment.
